August: Daydream

August: Daydream

Date: 2024

Patti Smith recently spoke about the importance of daydreaming. She was reflecting on the beauty and peacefulness of letting the mind wander and explore new ideas.

When we think of daydreaming it feels like a kid staring out the window of his 4th grade class staring at the clouds.

It feels inherently childlike.

Some people would even go so far as to say "he needs medication, he can't seem to pay attention."

And yet, is daydreaming not the result of a peaceful, creative, happy, and healthy individual? Is it not something to cherish, to protect and perhaps even dedicate time to doing on a regular basis?

In modern conversation some people might call this "disassociating." But that word carries a sense of rejection of the current reality and becomes a protective mechanism to escape to someplace else.

So what is daydreaming then?

I think we all know it. We remember it. But it is uniquely peaceful in nature.

There is no anxiety. There is no overthinking. There is simply pure presence, joy and wonder. It is a place of fantasy and wonder in a way to expand the inner world into colorful and joyous heights.

It is to play with bubbles and to feel how your body feels to be completely submerged in a swimming pool. Are you wet if you are water?

It's a space that opens up to new ideas, new neuropathways are formed, you're free from habit or trauma or bad vibes. In a way, you're just letting your mind wander through the meadow.

So for the month of August - this glorious, warm, summer-filled month. Take some time to wander. Get lost. Explore the world without your phone. And maybe even daydream a little.

With light and love,

Sam Stokes

What do your daydreams feel like? What colors, themes, ideas seem to reoccur?

Have you ever taken yourself to a park or a beach or a nice area all by yourself to simply look at the clouds?

Have you ever tried daydreaming with others? Maybe you're a parent and you can daydream with your kids - they're the experts after all!
